How to Create a Google Search Campaign in 2026

Most businesses create a Google Search campaign by following Google’s prompts and assuming the platform will protect them from bad decisions. It will not. Google makes launching easy; it does not make wasting money difficult.

A profitable campaign starts before you click New campaign. You need a defined conversion, a controlled keyword structure, and ads that match what the searcher actually wants.

Define the conversion before creating the campaign

Open Google Ads, go to Goals, and confirm which conversion actions should guide bidding. For a lead-generation campaign, this might be a completed contact form, booked consultation, qualified phone call, or another action with real commercial value.

Do not optimize toward page views, button clicks, or visits to the contact page. Those are interactions, not business outcomes.

Set your primary conversion actions deliberately. Primary actions appear in the Conversions column and can guide automated bidding; secondary actions are available for observation without telling Google to chase them.

I regularly audit accounts where every measurable action is marked as primary, including newsletter sign-ups and ten-second page visits. Google then reports plenty of conversions while the sales team receives nothing useful.

Test the conversion before building the campaign. If the tracking is wrong, every bidding and budget decision that follows will also be wrong.

Create the Google Search campaign without surrendering control

Go to Campaigns, click the plus button, and choose New campaign. Select Sales, Leads, Website traffic, or create the campaign without goal guidance, then choose Search as the campaign type.

Google requires at least one conversion goal during setup. Confirm that the campaign is using the conversion action you reviewed, rather than every account-default goal.

Name the campaign so another person can understand it six months from now. A useful convention includes the market, service, network, and intent, such as UK | Google Ads Audit | Search | High Intent.

Names such as Search Campaign 3 are a small sign of a badly managed account. If the structure is unclear in the campaign list, it will be worse inside the campaign.

Review the network settings before continuing. Unless you have a specific reason to test them, start with Google Search and disable the Display Network. Search partners can be tested separately once you have enough conversion data to judge their value.

Set locations based on presence, not interest

Choose the countries, cities, or regions where you can genuinely serve customers. Then open the location options and select the setting that targets people who are in or regularly in those locations.

The broader default can include people who merely show interest in your target area. That may suit hotels or relocation services, but it is usually wrong for a local consultant or B2B provider.

If you sell in Israel, the US, and the UK, do not place all three markets in one Google Search campaign. Separate them. Search behaviour, competition, language, conversion rates, and cost per click are different.

Set the campaign language according to the language of the keywords, ads, and landing page. Language targeting does not translate your campaign.

Choose a bidding strategy that matches your data

For a new campaign with reliable conversion tracking, Maximize Conversions can be a reasonable starting point. It gives Google room to find conversions within the daily budget.

Do not add a target CPA because Google suggests one during setup. A target based on no campaign history is a guess wearing a professional-looking label.

If the account has weak tracking, very low volume, or suspicious conversion data, fix that before relying on automated conversion bidding. Maximize Clicks with a sensible bid limit can be used temporarily while collecting clean data, but it is not a permanent strategy for serious lead generation.

Your eventual target CPA should come from business economics. Work backward from lead-to-sale rate, average gross profit, and the percentage of gross profit you can afford to spend on acquisition.

Build tightly focused Google Search campaign ad groups

A Google Search campaign should be divided by search intent, not by every keyword variation you can imagine. Each ad group needs a clear theme that can be represented by one relevant ad and one relevant landing page.

For an advertising audit service, separate ad groups might cover Google Ads audit, PPC audit, and Google Ads consultant. Do not combine campaign management, marketing strategy, Facebook advertising, and account audits in the same ad group.

Start with a controlled set of phrase-match and exact-match keywords. Broad match can work with strong conversion data, meaningful volume, and disciplined negative-keyword management, but it is not a free shortcut to scale.

Google increasingly treats keyword match types as signals rather than rigid rules. This makes the search terms report more important, not less important.

Add an initial negative-keyword list before launch. Common exclusions may include free, jobs, salary, course, template, definition, and DIY, depending on the offer.

Write responsive search ads for the searcher

Create at least one strong responsive search ad per ad group. Google recommends supplying multiple headlines and descriptions so it can test combinations, but more text is not automatically better.

Use the primary search theme in several headlines. Then cover the commercial offer, a meaningful differentiator, a credibility signal, and a clear next step.

For an account-audit campaign, headline angles might include Google Ads Account Audit, Find Where Budget Is Being Wasted, Audit by a Senior Paid Ads Consultant, and Get a Clear Action Plan.

Do not fill every headline with a slightly rewritten version of the keyword. The ad needs to answer why the prospect should choose you, not prove that you can repeat their search.

Pinning can control where an asset appears, but heavy pinning reduces Google’s ability to test combinations. Pin only when a statement must appear in a particular position for legal, brand, or messaging reasons.

Add sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets, images where eligible, and other relevant assets. Assets make the ad larger and give the searcher more useful paths, but they cannot rescue a weak offer.

Match the landing page to the keyword and ad

Send the click to the page that best answers the search. A person searching for a Google Ads audit should land on the audit service page, not the homepage and not a generic contact page.

The landing page should repeat the core promise, explain what the customer receives, answer the obvious objections, and present one clear conversion path. Remove distractions that compete with the main action.

Check the page on mobile. A page that looks polished on a large monitor can still bury the form beneath long copy, load slowly, or display an unusable calendar on a phone.

The uncomfortable truth is that many Google Ads problems are landing-page problems. Buying more traffic will not fix a weak offer, unclear positioning, or a form nobody wants to complete.

Set a budget that can produce usable evidence

Your daily budget should be large enough to generate meaningful click and conversion volume. A budget that buys two expensive B2B clicks per day will take months to tell you anything.

Estimate the likely cost per click, conversion rate, and cost per conversion before launch. These numbers will not be exact, but they will expose whether the budget and expectations belong in the same reality.

Do not split a modest budget across ten campaigns. Concentrate spending around the market and service with the clearest commercial case.

Review search terms and lead quality after launch

Check search terms frequently during the first weeks. Add irrelevant queries as negatives, identify useful new themes, and watch for close variants that stretch the meaning of your keywords.

Do not optimize around click-through rate alone. A highly clickable ad that attracts the wrong prospect is not successful.

Connect campaign data with actual lead quality. Record whether leads are qualified, contacted, progressed, and sold. If the platform only receives a form submission while the sales team knows the lead was useless, Google learns from incomplete information.

Give automated bidding enough time to operate, but do not use the learning phase as an excuse to ignore obvious waste. Wrong locations, irrelevant search terms, broken forms, and accidental broad targeting should be fixed immediately.

Before you launch

  1. The correct primary conversion fires once after a real completion.
  2. Location targeting uses presence in the selected market.
  3. Search and Display networks match the campaign plan.
  4. Every keyword, ad, and landing page shares the same intent.
  5. Negative keywords, budget limits, billing details, and final URLs have been checked.
